Mark it down: Friday, August 7, 2026. International Beer Day always lands on the first Friday of August, which means the date shuffles around a bit year to year. This is practically begging to kick off a weekend. Coincidence? We don’t think so.

Quick clarification: Because people mixed these up constantly: International Beer Day isn’t the same thing as National Beer Day, which Americans celebrate every April 7th. That one commemorates the day in 1933 when the Cullen-Harrison Act took effect, legalizing low-alcohol beer sales again after years of Prohibition, reportedly prompting President Franklin Roosevelt to remark that it was “a good time for a beer.” International Beer Day is the bigger, global version. Same energy, worldwide guest list. Most folks figure International Beer Day as just some ancient tradition or a boardroom gimmick. Nope. There are a real story and a lot more fun behind it.

And before you raise your glass this upcoming Friday, let’s get into where this day came from, why it stuck around, and why our Fredericksburg breweries genuinely give a damn.

How a Bar Idea in California Turned into a Worldwide Holiday

Back in 2007, Jesse Avshalomov and his friends—Evan Hamilton, Aaron Araki, and Richard Hernandez—were hanging out in Santa Cruz, California, and had a thought most of us have had at some point over a beer: “Why doesn’t this have its own day?” So, they made one. The first celebration happened on August 5, 2007, and stuck to that date for a few years. But as more cities jumped in, the founders realized locking it to a fixed date made it harder for breweries and bars everywhere to plan around it.

Therefore, in 2013, they moved it to the first Friday of August, and it’s stayed there ever since. That small idea didn’t stay small for long. In 2009, it had spread across the U.S. In 2012, it had gone worldwide. Today, International Beer Day is celebrated in more than 200 cities across roughly 80 countries on six continents. Not bad for something that started as a few friends shooting the breeze. The founders kept it simple:

• Gather with friends and enjoy a beer. No agenda needed.
• Thank the brewers and bartenders who actually get that pint into your hand.
• Unite the world under one beverage—because beer doesn’t care what language you speak.

Beer’s History Goes Back Way Further Than 2007

International Beer Day itself is young, but beer is one of the oldest beverages humans have ever made. The earliest evidence of brewing dates back roughly 5,000 years to ancient Mesopotamia — modern-day Iraq — where the Sumerians didn’t just brew beer; they documented it. The “Hymn to Ninkasi,” a poem dedicated to the Sumerian goddess of brewing, essentially doubled as a written beer recipe. Beer wasn’t just a beverage in the ancient world, but it was practically an economy.

In ancient Egypt beer was used as partial payment for pyramid builders, who received several liters daily as part of their wages. Centuries later, European monasteries became the brewing centers, with monks perfecting the recipes and techniques that would define the craft for generations. Then, in 1516, beer got downright legal. Duke Wilhelm IV of Bavaria issued the Reinheitsgebot, the Bavarian Purity Law, decreeing beer could only be made from barley, hops, and water. (Yeast joined the list later, once Louis Pasteur’s 19th-century research explained what fermentation was actually doing.) Part consumer protection, part quality control and part economic policy — the law also kept wheat and rye available for bakers.

The Reinheitsgebot became one of the longest-running food regulations in history, with versions of it still shaping German brewing law today. Ok, so enough with the history. You’re not compelled to read the origin to enjoy a pint. No pressure. Point is: when you crack open a cold one on August 7, you are part of something that’s been going strong for thousands of years. It’s a reminder that when you raise a glass on August 7th, you’re taking part in something that stretches back thousands of years before anyone thought to put an official name on it.

Today’s craft breweries continue that tradition of experimenting with ingredients, respecting old brewing practices, and creating beers that reflect their communities’ unique character. That’s part of the reason beer is so loved. Ask ten people their favorite style and you’ll get ten different answers — pilsner, stout, IPA, amber, somebody’s weird sour phase. Doesn’t matter. However, it ends up in your glass, beer has got this one trick it always pulls: it turns strangers into regulars and regulars into family.
