International Beer Day – What’s the Real Story and Why Fat Ass Brewery Pours Bigger

Every International Beer Day, beer lovers do what they do best. Gather. Pour. Drink. Beer shows up everywhere that matters — and a few places that don’t, and we’re not judging. Out here at Fat Ass Brewery and our new downtown taproom, Fat Ass Off The Ranch—that’s the whole point: come as you are, drink what you like, leave the pretense at the gate. No dress code, no tasting notes, no side-eye for what’s in your pint. Just good company, a cold one, and Texas hospitality.

International Beer Day Approaches This Friday, August 7

Mark it down: Friday, August 7, 2026. International Beer Day always lands on the first Friday of August, which means the date shuffles around a bit year to year. This is practically begging to kick off a weekend. Coincidence? We don’t think so.

Quick clarification: Because people mix these up constantly, International Beer Day isn’t the same thing as National Beer Day, which Americans celebrate every April 7th. That one commemorates the day in 1933 when the Cullen-Harrison Act took effect, legalizing low-alcohol beer sales again after years of Prohibition, reportedly prompting President Franklin Roosevelt to remark that it was “a good time for a beer.”

International Beer Day is the bigger, global version. Same energy, worldwide guest list. Most folks figure International Beer Day as just some ancient tradition or a boardroom gimmick. Nope. There are a real story and a lot more fun behind it. And before you raise your glass this upcoming Friday, let’s get into where this day came from, why it stuck around, and why our Fredericksburg breweries genuinely give a damn.

How a Bar Idea in California Turned into a Worldwide Holiday

Back in 2007, Jesse Avshalomov and his friends—Evan Hamilton, Aaron Araki, and Richard Hernandez—were hanging out in Santa Cruz, California, and had a thought most of us have had at some point over a beer: “Why doesn’t this have its own day?” So, they made one. The first celebration happened on August 5, 2007, and stuck to that date for a few years.

But as more cities jumped in, the founders realized locking it to a fixed date made it harder for breweries and bars everywhere to plan around it. Therefore, in 2013, they moved it to the first Friday of August, and it’s stayed there ever since. That small idea didn’t stay small for long. In 2009, it had spread across the U.S. In 2012, it had gone worldwide.

Today, International Beer Day is celebrated in more than 200 cities across roughly 80 countries on six continents. Not bad for something that started as a few friends shooting the breeze. The founders kept it simple:

- Gather with friends and enjoy a beer. No agenda needed.

- Thank the brewers and bartenders who actually get that pint into your hand.

- Unite the world under one beverage—because beer doesn’t care what language you speak.

Beer’s History Goes Back Way Further Than 2007

International Beer Day itself is young, but beer is one of the oldest beverages humans have ever made. The earliest evidence of brewing dates back roughly 5,000 years to ancient Mesopotamia — modern-day Iraq — where the Sumerians didn’t just brew beer; they documented it.

The “Hymn to Ninkasi,” a poem dedicated to the Sumerian goddess of brewing, essentially doubled as a written beer recipe. Beer wasn’t just a beverage in the ancient world, but it was practically an economy. In ancient Egypt beer was used as partial payment for pyramid builders, who received several liters daily as part of their wages. Centuries later, European monasteries became the brewing centers, with monks perfecting the recipes and techniques that would define the craft for generations.

Then, in 1516, beer got downright legal. Duke Wilhelm IV of Bavaria issued the Reinheitsgebot, the Bavarian Purity Law, decreeing beer could only be made from barley, hops, and water. (Yeast joined the list later, once Louis Pasteur’s 19th-century research explained what fermentation was actually doing.) Part consumer protection, part quality control and part economic policy — the law also kept wheat and rye available for bakers. The Reinheitsgebot became one of the longest-running food regulations in history, with versions of it still shaping German brewing law today.

Ok, so enough with the history. You’re not compelled to read the origin to enjoy a pint. No pressure. Point is: when you crack open a cold one on August 7, you are part of something that’s been going strong for thousands of years. It’s a reminder that when you raise a glass on August 7th, you’re taking part in something that stretches back thousands of years before anyone thought to put an official name on it.

Beer Has Always Been About Bringing People Together and the Life of the Party

Today’s craft breweries continue that tradition of experimenting with ingredients, respecting old brewing practices, and creating beers that reflect their communities’ unique character. That’s part of the reason beer is so loved. Ask ten people their favorite style and you’ll get ten different answers — pilsner, stout, IPA, amber, somebody’s weird sour phase. Doesn’t matter. However, it ends up in your glass, beer has got this one trick it always pulls: it turns strangers into regulars and regulars into family.

A Celebration Worth Observing Annually

The craft beer movement has transformed the way many individuals enjoy beer. Consumers are also looking for more than just a one-size-fits-all beverage. They are celebrating the artistry, creativity and passion that goes into every single brew. Neighbors come together, families mark significant milestones, visitors taste the unique flavors of a location, and independent breweries—now social spaces—are alive with chatter. International Beer Day is a celebration of this spirit.

International Beer Day: Why Fat Ass Brewery Actually Cares

International Beer Day is not just a date on the calendar for Fat Ass Brewery. It embodies many of the values that guide all we do. Here’s why we mean it.

Fat Ass Brewery built this place around people, not just pints.

We built this whole place on “come as you are, leave as family.” Our founders, Gail and Jennie McCulloch, didn’t set out to build another stiff stop on the Texas wine trail. They built a Hill Country hangout where nobody needs a reservation, nobody needs an excuse, and everybody walks out part of the Fat Ass Family. That’s basically the whole mission of International Beer Day—thank the people behind the pint, bring people together over it—except we’ve been doing it every single day, not just when the calendar tells us to.

Every pour represents real work.

Craft beer, like the wine we’ve made for years, doesn’t happen by accident. Our brewmaster was up early adjusting a recipe. He stood over a kettle making sure the temperature was right. International Beer Day’s whole point – recognizing the people behind the pint. “Special Thanks to our great brewmaster Travis Chlem.”

Meet Our Brewmaster: Travis Clem

Fresh off a first-place win at the Fredericksburg Craft Beer Festival, Travis is the guy behind every pint you pour on International Beer Day.

Fresh country air, no A/C, no heaters, plus a tram rolling in to let the crowd enjoy the scenic vineyard. You’ll definitely love our good beer and good vibes.

Celebrate National White Wine Day the Fat Ass Way — 5 Fun Ideas

Because every wine holiday deserves a little Fat Ass hospitality — even the white wine kind. Mark your calendars, y’all — August 4 is National White Wine Day, and around here, that’s reason enough to chill a bottle and call the neighbors over. We’ll be straight with you: Fat Ass Ranch built our name on bold Texas reds and fruit wines sweet enough to make your grandma blush. But we’re not about to let “we mostly do red” stop us from celebrating a good holiday. Wine is wine, and any excuse to raise a glass with good people is one we’re taking. So here are 5 fun ways to celebrate National White Wine Day — plus one honest surprise waiting at the bottom. Let’s get into it.

5 Ways to Toast National White Wine Day (Fat Ass Style)

1. Throw a Wine Tasting with Your People

You don’t need a sommelier certificate to pull this off. Just a few bottles, some snacks, and people who like to talk about what’s in their glass.

Pick 3 to 5 white wine varietals to taste side by side
Set out cheese, crackers, fresh fruit, or a bowl of Texas pecans between pours
light to bold so nothing steamrolls the wine before it.
Keep it loose. “What do y’all taste?” is basically the only tasting card you need

This isn’t a stuffy affair. It’s a Tuesday night that turned into an occasion.

2. Branch Out and Try Something New

If you keep reaching for the same bottle, National White Wine Day is your permission slip to try something else:

Sauvignon Blanc — crisp, zesty, wakes up your whole mouth
Chardonnay — smooth, sometimes buttery, with a hint of vanilla if it’s spent time in oak
Viognier — perfumery, with peach and apricot in every sip

Trying something new is half the fun. You might just find your new go-to.

3. Pair It Up with Summer’s Best Dishes

Crisp white wine and summer food were made for each other — the lighter and zippier the wine, the better it plays with fresh flavors. Good pairings to build a plate around:

Grilled shrimp or fresh seafood
A salad with goat cheese and a squeeze of citrus
Roasted or grilled chicken
Pasta in a lemon or cream sauce
Soft cheeses and a charcuterie spread
Whatever fruits in season right now

You don’t need a fancy dinner party. A weeknight plate with the right wine next to it does just fine.

4. Be Smart on White Wine Facts & Serving Tips

A little wine knowledge goes a long way at the table. A few worth dropping on your friends:

White wine gets its light color from little to no contact with grape skins during fermentation — reds soak with the skins on to pull out color and tannins
You can actually make white wine from red or black grapes, as long as the skins come out early
Chardonnay is one of the most widely planted wine grapes on the planet
Wine’s been around for roughly 8,000 years, tracing back to the country of Georgia — and the earliest evidence ever found was white wine

Serving tips that’ll actually improve your glass:

Chill white wine down to about 45–50°F — colder than most fridges run by default
Don’t overdo the chill, or you’ll flatten out the flavor
Grab a glass with a narrower bowl to hold onto the aroma
Pour smaller servings, around 5 oz, so it stays cold longer in the glass

5. Hit the Road for a Wine Country Day

There’s drinking wine, and then there’s standing where it’s actually made. If you can swing a day trip, take it — walk the vines, talk to the winemakers, taste things you’ll never find on a store shelf. Texas has quietly built a wine scene worth bragging about. Spanish missionaries planted the first vines near El Paso back in the 1650s, and today Texas is the fifth-largest wine-producing state in the country — trailing only California, Washington, Oregon, and New York. If you’re anywhere near the Texas Hill Country, come see us. Fat Ass Ranch Winery & Brewery in Fredericksburg doesn’t take reservations — just show up. Tastings run $18 for sweet wines and $22 for dry, and either way, you walk out with a free glass and a good story.

Turns Out, even a Fat Ass Can Pour a Little White Wine

Here’s the honest part: Fat Ass Ranch built its whole reputation on bold reds and Texas fruit wines — our Sweet Texas Red and Country Peach Wine both took home gold medals, and we’re not shy about it. But it turns out we’ve got something for the white wine crowd too. Our Bent Oak Collection — a newer addition to the family — — is stocked with real, honest-to-goodness whites, sourced from Texas soil all the way to California’s Russian River Valley:

Bent Oak 2020 Blanc Du Bois (Texas)

A true Texas original, Blanc du Bois is known for its bright, refreshing personality. Ours opens with lively citrus flavors, hints of grapefruit and lemon, followed by notes of white peach and ripe melon with a clean mineral finish that keeps you coming back for another sip. It pairs beautifully with:

Fresh Gulf oysters
Spicy Cajun dishes
Goat cheese boards
seafood appetizers

Bent Oak Chardonnay 2020 Texas

If you’re looking for a classic Chardonnay, this one, checks all the boxes. Bright apple and citrus flavors are balanced by a smooth, rounded finish, making it an easy-drinking wine that feels equally at home during a casual backyard barbecue or an elegant dinner. Enjoy it alongside:

- Herb-roasted chicken
- Butter-poached lobster
- Creamy pasta dishes
- Big bowl of fettuccine alfredo

Bent Oak 2022 Chardonnay (Chalk Hill)

Sourced from California’s renowned Chalk Hill region, this Chardonnay showcases ripe orchard fruit, crisp citrus, and a smooth finish shaped by careful barrel aging. It’s elegant, approachable, and made for sharing around the table. Try it with:

Lobster
Roast chicken
Fettuccine Alfredo
Creamy appetizers

Bent Oak Winery Viognier, Russian River Valley, 2020

This Viognier is a full-bodied wine with heavy aromas of peach and honeysuckle with beautifully integrated acidity and a silky finish. It’s bold, charismatic, and impossible to overlook. This wine also dances across the palate with a balance of richness and crispness, leaving a lingering finish that keeps you coming back for more. Bent Oak Winery Viognier, Russian River Valley, 2020 wine also won a Bronze Medal at the 2024 Rodeo Uncorked – International Wine Competition, which was held Nov. 10-12, 2023, with 2,985 entries from 22 countries. Perfect culinary matches are:

Roasted turkey or chicken with fresh rosemary and thyme.
Butternut squash soup or sweet potato purees.
Pad Thai or mild, creamy coconut curries.
Baked brie or soft, creamy goat cheeses.
Seared scallops served with a rich butter sauce.
Apricot-glazed pork chops or roasted pork tenderloin.
Crab cakes paired with a light lemon aioli

If you want a simple, crowd-pleasing place to start, the Bent Oak 2020 Chardonnay is our go-to recommendation — but honestly, any bottle in the Bent Oak lineup will do this holiday justice.

Four bottles of Bent Oak Winery white wine with a Fat Ass stemless glass on a steel counter

And here’s a little extra incentive to help you celebrate National White Wine Day on August 4, we’re taking 10% off the entire Bent Oak white wine lineup

— Blanc Du Bois, Chardonnay, Roussanne, and Viognier — so there’s no better day to grab a bottle and see what all the fuss is about.

So, however you’re celebrating National White Wine Day this year — a backyard tasting, a new varietal, or a full wine country road trip — come raise a glass with the Fat Ass family.

Shop the Bent Oak 2020 Chardonnay, or come see us in Fredericksburg and let us pour you something worth talking about.

Happy National White Wine Day, y’all. Cheers! Must be 21+ to purchase and consume alcohol.

Closing Out September with a Cold One: Let’s Celebrate National Drink Beer Day

Excited about your first trip to Texas wineries? Hold that thought – because September 28th calls for something a bit hoppier. Woohoo! It’s National Drink Beer Day!

While the Texas Hill Country is famous for its wine trails, another beverage tradition is brewing that deserves your attention. Let’s raise a glass to one of humanity’s oldest and most beloved beverages – BEER!

There’s honestly no better way to wrap up September than with a perfectly chilled brew in hand, surrounded by good vibes and even better company.

So, what is National Drink Beer Day?

National Drink Beer Day, observed on September 28th, has a different origin and is not directly tied to the end of Prohibition. Its exact history is less documented, and it appears to be a more general observance. It coincides with the traditional timing of Oktoberfest celebrations around the world, making it a perfect day to raise a glass. Some sources suggest it is celebrated a few days after the unrecorded birthdate of Arthur Guinness, the founder of the famous Guinness Brewery.

Why September 28th Hits Different?

As September winds down, the weather’s finally cooperating in most places, making it perfect for outdoor brewery events. The summer heat is backing off, but you’re not quite ready for pumpkin spice everything. It’s that sweet spot where a cold beer tastes like liquid gold.

Likewise, craft beer celebrations during this time of year have their own special energy. Breweries in Fredericksburg, Texas, often roll out their fall seasonal selections, giving you the chance to sample everything from Oktoberfest-style lagers to hop-forward harvest ales. It’s like a preview of the cozy months ahead, bottled up and ready to enjoy.

They’re now also the heart of our communities. So, when we celebrate National Drink Beer Day, it’s about more than just enjoying an ice-cold beer. It’s about celebrating a local business that brings people together – supporting the brewmasters who pour their hearts into every batch, the farmers who grow the grains, and the communities that gather around taproom tables.

Making the Most of Your National Drink Beer Day Celebration

So how do you properly honor this beer holiday? Well, the options are as varied as the styles in a craft beer sampler pack. Some folks go all out with beer festival hopping, creating elaborate beer tasting itineraries that would make a sommelier jealous. Others prefer the laid-back approach – grabbing a six-pack and settling in for a movie marathon.

And to make the most of it, we’re happy to share with you some simple and fun tips!

Start with a Flight

If you’re new to the craft beer experience, start your tasting with a beer flight. These curated samples let you explore different styles without committing to a full pint. Try contrasting a crisp wheat beer against a robust porter to understand the incredible range of flavors malt and hops can create.

Fat Ass Brewery Beer Flight and beer

Pair It Right

Gone are the days when beer was just a burger’s companion. Today’s craft beers demand thoughtful beer and food pairing. A citrusy pale ale can elevate spicy barbecue, while a rich Belgian-style ale pairs beautifully with aged cheeses. Many Texas brewery tours now include pairing sessions that will change the way you think about beer and food.

Learn the Lingo

Understanding beer styles enhances your appreciation. Know the difference between ABV (alcohol by volume) and IBU (International Bitterness Units). Discover why a farmhouse ale tastes different from a pilsner, and what makes a sour beer intentionally tart. This knowledge transforms you from casual drinker to an informed beer enthusiast.

The Social Side of Suds

Beer festivals and brewery events have become cultural phenomena in Texas, bringing together music, food trucks, and community spirit. These gatherings aren’t just about the beer – they’re about the connections made over a shared pint. From Oktoberfest celebrations to intimate tap takeovers, there’s always something brewing in the Texas beer scene.

Also, many breweries now offer kombucha, hard seltzers, and even non-alcoholic craft beers, ensuring everyone can participate in the celebration.

Supporting Local Brewery: Why Your Choice Matters

When you choose to celebrate National Drink Beer Day at a local brewery, you’re doing more than just enjoying a fresh pint. You’re supporting local agriculture, creating jobs, and nurturing gathering spaces that strengthen community bonds. Studies show that for every dollar spent at a local brewery, approximately 70 cents stays in the local economy – that’s real impact, one pint at a time.

The Texas Brewery Experience

You don’t need a refined palate or extensive vocabulary. If it tastes good to you, you’re doing it right.

And speaking of doing it right, Texas breweries have mastered the art of creating spaces where everyone feels welcome.

What sets them apart isn’t just their beer – though the quality has reached impressive heights. It’s the atmosphere. These places understand that great beer is just one ingredient in the recipe for a perfect day out. They’re building experiences that stick with you long after the last sip.

Your September 28 Game Plan

Ready to celebrate? Start by checking out what’s happening at your local spots. Many brewpubs and restaurants run specials for National Drink Beer Day.

Raise a Glass & Join Fat Ass Brewery

We’d love to see you at Fat Ass Brewery National Drink Beer Day on Sunday, September 28th, from 2:00 to 5:00 PM. Bring your enthusiasm and friends, and let’s toast to local flavor, good company, and closing out the month with something refreshing. We have Danny Brooks, our featured local Texas musician, who will light up the patio with feel-good live music. Fat Ass Brewery will keep the taps flowing with our favorite craft beers, crisp brews, and frozen sangria.

Our Best Tips for Drinking Responsibly

Enjoying a cold one is best when it’s safe and mindful. A few reminders:

Pace yourself; drink water between beers.
If you’re driving, arrange a ride or use public transport.
Know your limits—beer styles vary widely in strength.
Consider non-alcoholic or low-alcohol beers if that’s your preference.

The Bottom Line

Good beer is meant to be shared, stories are meant to be told, and weekends in September are meant to be enjoyed.

Cheers to you, and see you at the Brewery!

Celebrate International Beer Day the Fat Ass Way: Food Pairings You Didn’t Know You Needed

International Beer Day rolls around every August. Here at Fat Ass Ranch, we take beer and good company seriously. We forget the pretentious craft beer lectures and complicated tasting notes. We’re talking about real food with real beer.

This year, let’s skip the guesswork and celebrate with these easy food + beer pairings. No overthinking. Just good flavor.

Why Food and Beer Work So Well Together

Beer cuts through fat. Fat smooths out the beer’s bite. It’s basic chemistry that creates magic in your taste buds. The carbonation cleanses your palate between bites, while the malt and hops complement different flavors in food.

Think of beer as a liquid seasoning. Light beers brighten rich dishes. Dark beers add depth to simple foods. Hoppy beers balance sweet and fatty flavors.

No Frills, All Flavor: International Beer Day Pairings That Hit the Spot

Wheat Beer

Wheat Beer + Fried Chicken

A hazy wheat beer brings a light, citrusy snap that cuts through fried chicken’s crunch. The bubbles keep your taste buds refreshed, bite after bite. Serve it up with a side of coleslaw, and you’ll wonder why you ever reached for sweet tea.

Wheat Beer + Pizza

The smooth, creamy texture matches melted cheese perfectly. The citrus notes cut through pepperoni grease without overpowering the tomato sauce. Fat Ass Peach Wheat Ale Beer works best with wood-fired pizza. The wheat complements fresh basil, while the beer’s natural cloudiness mirrors the creamy mozzarella.

Wood Fired Pizza

IPA

IPA + Spicy Tacos

India Pale Ales (IPAs) are bold. Spicy tacos, from fish to brisket, need something that can stand up to their heat. An IPA’s bitter notes tame the spice and balance out the heat from chili-laden tacos. Whether you go beef, chicken, or veggie, this combo packs flavor from both sides.

IPA + Spicy Wings

Hoppy beers love heat. The alpha acids in hops neutralize capsaicin, the compound that makes peppers hot. Your mouth gets relief between bites while the citrus hops add their flavor punch.

When pairing the IPA, consider the Wing Sauce:

While most IPAs will work, the specific citrus and tropical fruit notes in New England IPAs can be particularly effective with certain spicy sauces like those with a Jamaican jerk profile.

Amber Ale

Amber Ale + Mac ’n Cheese

An amber ale has a malty, caramel backbone. Pair it with creamy mac ’n cheese, especially when it is enhanced with ingredients like bacon, sausage, and other savory additions. Each sip draws out the cheesiness, while the malt tempers any sharpness.

Amber Ale + Smoked Sausage

Amber ales have a toasty, slightly sweet finish that pairs well with smoky meats. A grilled sausage—brat, kielbasa, or your favorite local variety—brings out the best in the beer. Add mustard, call it a meal.

Stout

Stout + Chocolate Anything

Got a sweet tooth? Try a rich stout with chocolate cake or brownies. A dark beer’s roasted notes blend right in with cocoa. Dessert is about indulgence—this pairing knows how to deliver.

Stout + Barbecue

The roasted malt flavors of a stout beer echo the char on your brisket. The beer’s bitterness cuts through sweet barbecue sauce like a knife.

Imperial stouts work with burnt ends. The high alcohol content stands up to bold flavors, while the chocolate and coffee notes add complexity to smoky meat.

Try Something New

International Beer Day is for adventure. Don’t stick to the usual pairings. Ask your local brewer what they recommend, or make your own matchups.

Build Your Own Pairings: Beer Day Done Your Way

Start with what you like. Love hoppy beers? Try them with fatty, salty foods. Prefer dark beers? Pair them with grilled or roasted dishes.
Consider intensity. Light foods need light beers. Heavy foods can handle strong flavors. But rules exist to be broken. Sometimes contrast works better than harmony.
Think about temperature. Cold beer with hot food creates a pleasant contrast. Room temperature beer might work better with cold appetizers.

The Fat Ass Philosophy

We believe good food and good beer make life better—no need to overthink it or spend a fortune. The best pairings happen when you pay attention to what tastes good together.

Your taste buds know what they like. Trust them. Experiment with confidence. The worst thing that could happen is, you drink great beer and eat great food. We call that a win-win around here.

Celebrate International Beer Day at Fat Ass Brewery

Making It Happen

Stock your fridge with different beer styles. Keep light lagers for everyday drinking. Add a few IPAs for spicy food nights. Grab some stouts for cold weather and rich desserts.
Cook what you love. Grill burgers. Fry chicken. Make pizza. The food matters more than perfect technique.
Invite friends over. Good beer and good food get better when you share them.

Bonus: Beer Floats Are a Thing

Yes, it’s real—and yes, it’s good. Drop a scoop of vanilla ice cream into a stout or porter. The result? A creamy, fizzy dessert that’s strangely satisfying. Try it at least once.

Want to Celebrate with Us?

If you’re near Fredericksburg, Texas, swing by Fat Ass Brewery. We’ve got cold beer, live music, food trucks, and plenty of room to kick back.
