Because every wine holiday deserves a little Fat Ass hospitality — even the white wine kind. Mark your calendars, y’all — August 4 is National White Wine Day, and around here, that’s reason enough to chill a bottle and call the neighbors over. We’ll be straight with you: Fat Ass Ranch built our name on bold Texas reds and fruit wines sweet enough to make your grandma blush. But we’re not about to let “we mostly do red” stop us from celebrating a good holiday. Wine is wine, and any excuse to raise a glass with good people is one we’re taking. So here are 5 fun ways to celebrate National White Wine Day — plus one honest surprise waiting at the bottom. Let’s get into it.

5 Ways to Toast National White Wine Day (Fat Ass Style)

1. Throw a Wine Tasting with Your People

You don’t need a sommelier certificate to pull this off. Just a few bottles, some snacks, and people who like to talk about what’s in their glass.

• Pick 3 to 5 white wine varietals to taste side by side
• Set out cheese, crackers, fresh fruit, or a bowl of Texas pecans between pours
• light to bold so nothing steamrolls the wine before it.
• Keep it loose. “What do y’all taste?” is basically the only tasting card you need

This isn’t a stuffy affair. It’s a Tuesday night that turned into an occasion.

2. Branch Out and Try Something New

If you keep reaching for the same bottle, National White Wine Day is your permission slip to try something else:

• Sauvignon Blanc — crisp, zesty, wakes up your whole mouth
• Chardonnay — smooth, sometimes buttery, with a hint of vanilla if it’s spent time in oak
• Viognier — perfumery, with peach and apricot in every sip

Trying something new is half the fun. You might just find your new go-to.

3. Pair It Up with Summer’s Best Dishes

Crisp white wine and summer food were made for each other — the lighter and zippier the wine, the better it plays with fresh flavors. Good pairings to build a plate around:

• Grilled shrimp or fresh seafood
• A salad with goat cheese and a squeeze of citrus
• Roasted or grilled chicken
• Pasta in a lemon or cream sauce
• Soft cheeses and a charcuterie spread
• Whatever fruits in season right now

You don’t need a fancy dinner party. A weeknight plate with the right wine next to it does just fine.

4. Be Smart on White Wine Facts & Serving Tips

A little wine knowledge goes a long way at the table. A few worth dropping on your friends:

• White wine gets its light color from little to no contact with grape skins during fermentation — reds soak with the skins on to pull out color and tannins
• You can actually make white wine from red or black grapes, as long as the skins come out early
• Chardonnay is one of the most widely planted wine grapes on the planet
• Wine’s been around for roughly 8,000 years, tracing back to the country of Georgia — and the earliest evidence ever found was white wine

Serving tips that’ll actually improve your glass:

• Chill white wine down to about 45–50°F — colder than most fridges run by default
• Don’t overdo the chill, or you’ll flatten out the flavor
• Grab a glass with a narrower bowl to hold onto the aroma
• Pour smaller servings, around 5 oz, so it stays cold longer in the glass

5. Hit the Road for a Wine Country Day

There’s drinking wine, and then there’s standing where it’s actually made. If you can swing a day trip, take it — walk the vines, talk to the winemakers, taste things you’ll never find on a store shelf. Texas has quietly built a wine scene worth bragging about. Spanish missionaries planted the first vines near El Paso back in the 1650s, and today Texas is the fifth-largest wine-producing state in the country — trailing only California, Washington, Oregon, and New York. If you’re anywhere near the Texas Hill Country, come see us. Fat Ass Ranch Winery & Brewery in Fredericksburg doesn’t take reservations — just show up. Tastings run $18 for sweet wines and $22 for dry, and either way, you walk out with a free glass and a good story.
